Essential Oil Safety 101: General Guidelines for Safe Use

When used properly, essential oils are powerful plant extracts that can support wellness and self-care. However, improper use can lead to adverse effects. Here are some essential guidelines to help you safely incorporate essential oils into your routine:

1. Avoid Essential Oils If Pregnant or Nursing Without Professional Guidance

Always consult with your healthcare provider before using essential oils during pregnancy or while nursing. Certain oils can affect hormonal balance or may be unsafe for the developing baby.

2. Dilution Is Key for Toddlers, Children, and Seniors

  • Essential oils should be diluted to a 1-2% concentration (or even less sometimes). For example, mix 1-2 drops of essential oil with a tablespoon of carrier oil.

  • Some oils, such as chamomile, are generally considered safe for children. However, it’s always best to consult with a qualified professional.

3. Citrus Oils and Sun Sensitivity

  • Citrus oils like Frankincense, Bergamot, Orange, Grapefruit, and Lemon can increase photosensitivity.

  • Avoid applying these oils to your skin before sun exposure to prevent burns or irritation.

4. Caution With Eucalyptus Oil

  • Eucalyptus oil should be avoided by individuals prone to seizures, as it can act as a trigger.

5. Interactions With Medications and Supplements

  • Some essential oils can interact with medications or supplements, either enhancing or reducing their effects. Consult with a healthcare provider if you are on medication.

6. Do Not Ingest Essential Oils

  • Ingesting essential oils can lead to serious health complications. Stick to topical or aromatic use unless directed otherwise by a certified aromatherapist.

7. Avoid Contact With Ears and Eyes

  • Essential oils can cause irritation or damage to sensitive areas like the eyes and ears. If contact occurs, flush with a carrier oil, not water.

8. Essential Oils Are Flammable

  • Keep oils away from open flames or heat sources to prevent fire hazards.

9. Pets and Essential Oils

  • Some essential oils can be toxic to pets, especially cats and dogs. Use caution when diffusing oils around animals, and ensure they have a way to leave the area if needed.

10. General Safety Precautions

  • Always patch-test new oils by applying a diluted drop to a small area of skin to check for reactions.

  • Store oils in a cool, dark place, out of reach of children.

  • Use only high-quality, therapeutic-grade oils from reputable sources.
